Business Sense + IT Skills

I read an interesting article in the net recently that I agree with, based on experience. It stipulates one thing: IT skills and business knowhow should go hand in hand.

Back in the old days, during the dot com boom, this might not have been the case. IT was still pretty much an infant then, the needs of businesses were simpler, the IT staff pool was relatively low.

Now, however, the number of people going into IT has increased manifold, creating cutthroat competition for both the businesses offering these IT solutions, and the hopeful IT recruits.

Since companies gain the privilege of really picking from a large pool of IT staff, it is good to distinguish these recruits based on their business sense, because:

1. The IT world is evolving and becoming more complex.

IT is now so intertwined with the business model, so your IT staff should be capable of understanding your business and creating IT solutions that complement it.

2. Similarly, because business and IT now go hand in hand, IT people must possess the necessary communication skills to be able to explain technical concepts to nontechnical businesspeople.

In my experience, I've observed many frustrating meetings between the IT department and the non-IT department, where the IT guy refuses to see things the way the other party sees it, and explains solutions in a language that is very much Greek to non-IT-savvy people. As a result, the end product does not help the business, and it ends up eating a lot of time, being subjected to many revisions.
